The iconic Mandarin Oriental Hotel, a 23-story building that had defined part of Miami’s skyline, was brought down in a controlled implosion early Sunday morning at 8:30 a.m.

The Demolition

The demolition was executed as a carefully choreographed event, with the tower collapsing first, followed by the garage structure. According to Ivy Fradin, managing member of BG Group Demolition, “The tower will come down first. The garage will come down second. But to the public eye, it will look like one carefully choreographed event.”

Community Impact

The implosion affected a large area around the hotel:

  • Exclusion zone: An 800-foot radius around the hotel where residents had to remain indoors with doors and windows closed
  • Affected buildings: St. Louis Condos, Brickell Key One, Isola, and Brickell Key Centre
  • Traffic disruptions: The Brickell Key bridge was closed from 7 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., with traffic rerouted westbound to Eighth Street

Residents in the exclusion zone, including Juan Martinez and his family with their five-month-old daughter Augustina, had to remain sheltered inside during the event.

Reactions

Witnesses and residents had mixed emotions about the demolition:

  • Nostalgia: “I’m sad, because it was a beautiful hotel, it was a beautiful building,” said one witness
  • Concern about change: “I think the vibe of the island will change a little bit,” said Juan Martinez
  • Appreciation for the execution: Many praised the precision of the demolition itself, with witnesses calling it “amazing” and noting the impressive control of the explosion
  • Architectural regret: One observer noted it was “a shame” to see a relatively modern, attractive building demolished after only about 20 years

Despite the initial fears about the explosion, the demolition was executed smoothly with proper crowd management and traffic control from Miami Police.
